Just few days before the Diesel family celebrated their xXx, Jeff Carvalho and Michael Williams had the opportunity to sit down with 55DSL’s Creative Director and owner Andrea Rosso in the brand new New York City’s showroom.

They spoke for Highsnobiety about 55DSL and the market, the brand’s heritage and the dreams for the future, the trips to Japan and the USA, up to his happy childhood in the fashion industry and his streetwear-inspirational teenage in Bassano.

Whilst in Japan this summer with 55DSL I was asked to be interviewed by the cult youth culture magazine WARP. When it came out this month, the only words that I had been written in English in the interview were ’The Southport Soul Weekender’. Last weekend the legendary festival came around once again to my home turf.

5000 party people came from all over the globe to make their pilgrimage to the quiet seaside town of Southport… and come to, in my opinion, one of the best music festivals in the World…Forget tents and chemical toilets its a slightly more civilized affair, with the holiday camp challets and indoor dancefloors keeping out the rain. Spread over 3 days and 3 nights SPW (as its known to its veterans) doesn’t stop for air, some of the best DJ’s go on at 6am and the challet parties keep the music (and madness) flowing on into Monday.

The line-up was insane (as ever) with the the international talent of Karizma, Jose James, De La Soul, Giles Peterson, Jazzanova with Ben Westbeech, Norman Jay, Moodyman, Mark Evans and the Muthafunkaz, Terry Hunter and soul legend Gloria Scott are to name just a selection of the SPW 42 line up… the list of talent goes on and on.

Friday was the night for me… the performance by Brooklyn based jazz singer Jose James was smooth and wooed the crowd with his soulful, drum and base and jazz infusions… here’s a face to keep your eyes on with a sound that raises you two inches from the floor. 

Dixon also raised the bar later that night (or earlier the next morning depending how you see it) and was hot on everyone’s lips after his intense performance in the Beat Bar. The dancers (including me) were still in the zone at 8am as he played out a deep blend of Berlin Techno and New York Disco grooves.

The rest of the weekend was random, very sociable and totally fun… and took a week and more to get over.

Following the success of their Notting Hill’s exhibition in August, 55DSL and Mitchy Bwoy have teamed up again to open a brand new exhibition space in London!

Starting from this Winter, the 55DSL Newburgh Street Flagship store will infact play host to the best artists that you don’t know but may already appreciate: looking further than the end of our own noses - 55DSL is committed to using this space to celebrate the true originators of all the disciplines of visual arts!

And to kick things off soon, 55DSL proudly presents a collaboration between Rabodiga and Mitchy Bwoy with “Hell Hath No Fury”, an exhibition that will explore the basic themes surrounding trust, sexuality and innocence, where the artists will take turns at being the wolf and the little red riding hood… Will innocence prevail? Only you can decide! 

The first day for the public to see this show is Saturday 6th of December - from 12pm - the artists will be in residence. The work from this show is available to buy, prices range up to £1500, and that’s not all: to accompany this show there are 55 limited edition prints, with the stunning image you see in the picture above, all signed by the artists, at £95 each that only the first 20 will be able to buy at £55! 

Perhaps the only thing that the 2 artists involved have in common is versatility. Mistress and Master of styles respectively Rabodiga and Mitch have long enjoyed the respect of their peers, blurring the boundaries of commercial design, illustration & street art - they both represent a new breed. 

Spanish artist Rabodiga has only very recently graced our shores with her work. Undeniably fresh and original, her art continues to inspire. Flying in the face of traditional graffiti Rabodiga coveys a more intimate & emotional motive to her work. Perhaps subconsciously, she provides a genuine narrative to street art (normally devoted to the basics of ego & status). Her life is literally on the walls for u to read as a book. Devoid of pretence, her art is truly essential & instinctive. 

Mitchy Bwoy is a design and culture obsessive. He tirelessly supports and communicates the best of what he feels contemporary life has to offer. With a vast portfolio of work mainly in music and clothing design he continues to innovate & diversify. Post ‘graff’ / post ‘pop’ / post ‘whatever you like’ …….. Mitch has consistently come forward with the most true visual representation of modern times.

You probably know, Only the Brave already has Maison Martin Margiela, Viktor & Rolf, Vivienne Westwood, Dsquared2, and obviously Diesel in his roster… a big family incredibly cool, will be hard for 55DSL to find what to wear at this Christmas family lunch!

On Thursday the 6th November, 55DSL and Vice preséntant another sessions of Le Rade: putting back the old in old- school is the new rave!

We know and you know: cool bars are so passe’! This year 55DSL is teaming up with the infamous Vice France crew for the total Paris take over of the Ville Lumiere’s worst bars - in true old school style!

We are asking you; when was the last time you sat on your grandpa’s lap?

Forget about good clean fun, and come over at Le Lutetia, in 47, rue de la Grange aux belles 75010 (au croisement rue de la Grange aux belles et rue Juliette Dodu) for a session of dirty beats and dirty moves!

To celebrate the launch in Italy of a brand new TV series, Romanzo Criminale - La Serie, 12 episodes produced by SKY Cinema and Cattleya in association with RTI-Mediaset and on air from November the 10th every Monday at 9pm on Sky Cinema 1, 55DSL has just released a limited edition tee that will be the special guest of a big launch party in true gangsta style in Rome this weekend!

Based on Giancarlo De Cataldo’s 2002 novel, in turn inspired by the Banda della Magliana true story, the series tells the story of a gang of ambitious street thugs hitting the big time in the 1970s and their attempt to rule Rome’s criminal underworld stretches across 20 years.

The right occasion for the infamous 55DSL creative team to create their bloodier and more sinister tee ever! 

With an ever-growing success taking its attendance for the 7th edition in 2007 beyond the level of 20,000 people, while furtherly increasing its artistic quality, the International Festival of Electronic Music and Arts
Club To Club comes back with its 8th edition from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th November in Turin, Italy and on Saturday 8th November in Rottherdam, the Netherlands, willing to investigate contemporary sounds and new cultural trends, with a dreamy image and claim ”In dreams I dance with you”.

Coming back in the very same days when Turin becomes the Italian capital of contemporary arts and design, Club To Club 08 will try suggesting some new and unusual trajectories while questioning the idea of contemporary, leaving room to extraordinary and amazing music and different yet converging artistic languages.

New ideas and challenges will let the Festival’s audience decide their favourite route inside this year’s dense programme. Artists, producers of sound and visuals, record labels and “families”, teachers and pupils (and pupils influencing their teachers), far from obsolete genre definitions and constantly reinveinting their art, will fill the Festival’s programme.

For the second year in a row, 55DSL is official partner of the event and will take the chance to show there the preview of the Spring Summer 2009 10.55 with graphics by Vasava, Soren Strange Lentz, Matthew Goldman, Kustaa Saksi, Rinzen, Dstrukt, Serge Seidlitz and Andrea- Pink is Punk. And on this occasion 55DSL also designed and produced a very limited tee in 2 versions, that can you see below, and that very hardly you’ll be able to grab but… you’ll never know!

From the 4th to the 9th November at the EICMA tradeshow in Milan, Pav. 6, Booth L24, 55DSL is pleased to launch a brand new motocross clothing line created in collaboration with 30-year heritage in the off-road field’s AXO, for a winning combination and guaranteed success!

The line will comprise helmets, goggles, sweaters, pants and gloves, and will be available in limited quantities in the best motorbike dealerships worldwide as of January 2009. A large-scale advertising campaign will accompany the collection, which will also be on display at 55DSL flagship stores across the globe…

“We are both important international companies who are tied to the worlds of youth and sport, so this was a natural and spontaneous collaboration,” says Andrea Rosso, creative director of 55DSL. “Both our target market, ranging from 18-30 years, and our core values are in line with those of AXO. The resulting collection is testament to this symbiotic relationship.”  

“The line is a mix of street style and retro inspiration, with technical elements that are traditionally part of AXO products,” explains Valentina Zago, product development manager for AXO Sport. “We are breathing fresh air into the world of Motocross and distinguishing ourselves as trendsetters by establishing a collaboration with a prestigious international brand.
