New rumors about 55DSL are stirring on the web these days, since the incredibly attentive manga readers concerned about artist Youka Nitta’s recent illustration that resembles one of the brand’s advertising photographs.
Specifically, the opening page in Stand on Vessel (Haru wo Daiteita series #49) manga in the August issue of Be-Boy Gold Magazine bears a great resemblance to the famous “kiss on the the ledge” from the Fall-Winter 06 campaign, and Nitta directly acknowledged that she traced it and that she is somewhat naïve in her awareness of copyrights.
Nitta also promised to deal with these issues more carefully in the future, and apologized profusely to 55DSL, the people involved, and her readers. 55DSL says: Nitta, don’t worry, we’re not that kind of brand, we consider this a tribute, only the greatest are copied, right? But honestly, our chick is hotter than yours!

Cool, but the artist has quit altogether.
Copyright in Japan is serious business.

Thank you for your forgiveness of Nitta sensei. You just made me a fan of your brand ^^
July 18th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Thank you for being such great sports in this issue.
In my opinion, although it was definitely not kosher to do the copying, the entire issue has been blown completely out of proportion.
I have always been a fan of your line and am now an even bigger one because the company is showing such great character, as opposed to people out there who kick people when they’re down and have already apologized for their mistakes.

Hello there!
Bumped into this page from a Nitta Youka community and all I can say is kudos to 55DSL for being exceedingly big-hearted towards a very beloved manga artist in our fan circle! She has been getting quite a lot of flak from various parties and it is a relief that your brand has decided to give her a generous break.
One can only hope that 55DSL will be the trendsetter on dealing with this!
Rock on.
xoxoxo

Wow! I’m really surprised that 55DSL took the news so well. I appreciate your patience and understanding so much!
July 18th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
you’re great and you’re reaction shows it! only good things are copied or get tributes. i’m a fan of fashion items, and i love manga and visual art in general as much as i love movies and novels, so i find it funny and amusing to search for references about cool items and trendy brands while reading or watching.
when i find some i always go: “wow the author of this must like it too!”
i really love Nitta sensei art and i’ve always apprecited references to famous brands like yours in her stories, they are pretty obvious (in the good way) and i’ve always thought it was a tribute to those she liked best.

Dear 55DSL,
I am a fan of Nitta Youka. I am a little worried about writing here and have been thinking of the right words for sometime. Ok here goes…
SORRY for the trouble but…THANK YOU for your kindness! You are * Gosh what more can I write * truly wonderful.
No amount of words could describe how relieved her fans are reading your comment on this matter.
This incident has really make a lot of her fans including myself really sad. The past few days, things had gone out of hand and she had to sacrifice her career due to this mistake.
Yet you gave her a little hope all is not lost. Life presently is a box of chocolate for Nitta Youka, it’s bitter now, but with your kind words, I wish it would be sweet for her soon.
Thank You!!

She indeed was naive in her tracing and she is trying to make amends by retiring from the profession. I don’t condone what she did but I appreciate and admire her artwork. I appreciate your words as her fan. Nitta-sensei is getting pelted with stones, mostly, by her former fans (and quite possibly by some who never liked her). Your comment is a breath of fresh air. Thank you.

You know Nitta’s “chick” is a dude, right?
July 22nd, 2008 at 4:15 am
Hi,
Just want to say I find Iwaki way hotter. I have to admit I am not a slave to fashion so I don’t recognize brands. But as soon as this little controversy surfaced I am suddenly noticing your brand everywhere I go. You rock! Maybe you should hire Iwaki as a spokesperson for your brand. Maybe a makeshift shoot in a future Haru issue, (Holding out Hope for Nitta’s return) And Charlene could become a manga character, What you think guys

I just want to say thank you to you guys for your words, even if I don’t condone her ways of action (quite the opposite, actually) I believe your words must be very comforting for her in the middle of this sea of hatred and judgment towards her.
I still am very attached to her manga ‘Haru wo Daite Ita’, and think is a shame she’s stopping her work altogether, but that’s another matter altogether.
Thank you, once again for showing her the kindness I am sure she so needed, it really shows how great the people behind 55DSL is.
But I still like Iwaki-san’s prettier than your chick

I thank you for your kind and humorous thoughts and support during this chaotic time for Nitta Youka. I hope this helps her move on so she can get back to the business of writing mangka.
I have never heard of your brand before, but now I’ll look for it to purchase! ^_^ Thanks!

Well, this is how an important brand reacts about a situation like this, but I think they don’t know too much about the stories of Youka Nitta sensei. When they realized about the boys of Nitta sensei, they definetely are gonna say that her boys are the hottiest!!! XDDDDD
July 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 am

I think that 55DSL is taking a really mature and thoughful stance on the whole matter. At the very least, the incident is causing some more brand awareness for 55DSL, isn’t it?
I am a fan of both 55DSL and Nitta-sensei, so I do appreciate what this post is saying very much and am very pleased with it.
I can’t speak for all of Nitta-sensei’s fans all over the world, but I can speak for myself as a fan when I say thank you for your positive reaction. It really is encouraging to hear someone take the high road when the popular thing to do is kick the poor artist when she’s down. Thank you so very much!

What sensei did was stupid and irresponsible. Forget about legalities it’s not on to take credit for someone else’s hard work. However, i am humbled by diesel’s stance. Thanks for not draging sensei to the cleaners.
July 23rd, 2008 at 5:22 am
Thank you for being so considerate and so mature about this incident! >_<
Your photograph is really stunning, beautiful, and creative! But I do have to admit Youka Nitta’s “chick” is 100x hotter, haha~ (:
July 23rd, 2008 at 2:36 pm
What a bloody shame this all was. Thanks 55DSL for being so cool about this, even though Youka-san was wrong. I’m not really a trendy kind of person but I’ll be looking at your brand now. Cool people behind a good company make a great product. By the way, now that you have the fangirl community’s attention, now would be a great time to pose some hot-to-death guys together and let turnabout be fair play all the way to the bank. Think about the built in fan base. Check us out at cons like yaoi con, check out what Nitta Youka’s manga are going for online now–we spend money! You’d certainly have my attention and if one of the guys was as hot as Iwaki, some of my hard-earned money’s attention as well. I’d be happy to serve as a beta-drooler market tester for the photos.

Thank you very much for your kindness regarding to this matter! I am a die hard fan of Nitta sensei. I can not imagine if somthing terrible happen to her. Now, I am a huge fan of 55DSL.
July 24th, 2008 at 10:20 am
I really am glad and happy with your response, But these rumors of Youka Nitta quitting is killing me. I’m not okay with what happened but I really don’t want her to quit i love her stuff way to much, I hope that this will put her at ease
July 25th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Nitta-sensei, ganbatte kudasai!!!

Thank you 55DSL.
Thank you for forgiving Nitta, and thank you for publishing that you forgive her. I think that if you guys could forgive her for what she did, then no one else should be griping about it. She’s a great manga-ka. Her stories are captivating and her art is FANTASTIC!!!!
It saddens me deeply to see that she has given up her career because of this.
I really wished she could have moved on, take your blessings and just keep on with her work.
As her fans, we can’t do anything but also apologize on her behalf. Your gesture of forgiveness shows that you guys rock!! and it will not be forgotten.
Thanks again.
